Bristol Ariel Head
Once again Bristol Ariel Rowing Club open our doors to clubs all over the country including Globe, Royal Docks, Bideford
and Plymouth, to compete at Bristol Ariel Head. This year saw the biggest ever entry for the event with over half of
those entries being Juniors.
The weather forecast luckily didn't come true and the rain held off for the most of the day.

A massive thank you to all those over traveled to Bristol Ariel Rowing Club to join us and to the Lord Mayor and
Mayoress of Bristol for venturing down to conquering the mud to present the medals to all the winners.

Hope to see ever one again next year and hopefully a bigger entry.

Planning permission
Ariel has finally received Planning Permission from Bristol City Council to extend our landing stage which is currently
27meters long. Work is soon to sort on extending it to about 58meters long, increasing our boating capacity by 150%.
This would have a significant effect on all club outings: making boating easier, learn to row courses having more room,
and the head race capacity to enlarge too.

Spirits Ride High at Bristol Ariel Rowing Club
Bristol Ariel is pleased to welcome two new members to it’s long running cast of the Tempest.
Following in the long held tradition of the club, Iris and Stephano will take their place
a                                    alongside Prospero, Alonso, Ceres, Miranda, Ferdinand and Antonio and provide the club
two                                two high quality racing shells for the rejuvenated senior squads.
Thanks to the hard work and perseverance of the clubs former secretary, Lue Holder,  Bristol Ariel
Rowing club was awarded a grant from the Governments Awards for All Programme.  Following 6 months of patience
and numerous submissions of the clubs accounts, her hard work was finally rewarded in January with the award of a
grant of £10k.
Along with money raised from various events, the grant was used to purchase Stephano  an 85kg
Stampfli  bow loaded
coxed 4. The Drunken Butler will rack alongside Kings and Dukes  whilst in another part of the boathouse spirits are
riding high as Ceres and Juno  are joined by Iris (another spirit in the Tempest) , a 75kg
Stampfli coxless quadruple
scull.
Most of you will know that Ariel’s main fleet of boats are made by
Janousek
and whilst buying Stampflis looks like a move away from this manufacturer it
is in fact NOT.
Stampfli and Janousek are actually the same company the only
difference being the mould shape and quality of materials used.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the club committee to thank
all those people who have worked, volunteered and raised money in order to
secure both of these boats.
The boats will be officially named at 11.30am on Sunday 14th June

Splash and Dash
Splash and dash 2009 will be run on Saturday 16th May.

Each year the club runs a fun day for non-rowers to raise money for the club.  The idea is for as many club members as
possible to enter crews of friends/relatives/co-workers etc in a day of knock-out races with a prize for the winning
crew.  The races are run using the tub fours and a training session using the boats is included in the price.  It costs £40
per team to enter (so £10 per person) and the representative club member either coxes the crew or organises a
suitable cox from other members.  Other activities may be included on the day for the crews which are knocked out
early (last year there was an opportunity to try dragon boating) and food and drink will be available to buy throughout
the day.
This year the event will be run on Saturday 21st June.  Due to the demand on the tub fours for training I’d encourage
you to organise the crews as soon as possible.  Entries can be made through me
Simon Hewitt and the entry fee will
be collected on the day.  Training sessions can also be booked through me and can be run at anytime that the club is
open (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday evenings and the weekends) or if you have access to keys than you can organise
the sessions as required (please still notify me of when you will be out).
Click here for the poster.  If you have any further questions please email Simon Hewitt or simply ask members of the
club that were around for previous events. Last year the splash and dash was over-subscribed and a second day had
to be run later in the summer – it would be great to have the same thing happen again this year as the days are great
fun and a good way to raise money for the club.

April Learn to Row
Alex Brown has completed the first of this years learn to row courses, recruiting almost 20 new members!  Along with
many members of our club, he coached them through the basics on rowing, covering the indoor rowing technique,
water safety and actual water outings.  Many thanks to him and his team for making such a big difference to the club.

The next
learn to row course will be held at Ariel, starting Saturday 7th June.  If you want to book please contact Alex
Brown and he will give you full and further details.

Reflection on winter season
As winter passes into summer we see the start of the regatta season again.  Ariel took part in many of the head races
over the past season with crews from junior to veteran taking part.  13 crews took part in 6 head race events in total.
Now to the summer season……..look out for results on the members’ info pages.

Clubhouse development
Work is continuing to progress on the club house to improve our facilities.  The windows have now been bricked up,
making the boathouse more secure.
Our thanks go to all those who dedicate their valuable time to the project.

Oar Fund
This year the oar fund is going to be put towards……….So far Julian Tavener has raised a substantial portion of this,
roughly half, by coercing the veteran crews to donate to the fund.  Fantastic work so far, hopefully soon, you will all
hear about the finer details.
