History...

The Bristol Hanover sporting exchange is a lively social as well as sporting event. Ariel joined the exchange in 1981 as
one of many sporting clubs in Bristol who participate.

Every second year a team of Ariel rowers will join other Bristol teams of football, tennis, squash to name but a few and
travel to Hanover staying as guests in their German hosts private homes. The following year we reciprocate and host a
number of Germans in our homes.

This event is held over a long weekend in either September or October. Each year there are planned activities based
around rowing, culture, site-seeing, shopping and socialising.

Every year Linden and Ariel will battle it out on the river competing for the coveted Bristol Hanover Challenge Cup.

Ariel times their trip to Germany to enable them to compete in the Head of the River Liner, Germany’s most renowned
head race. This is a highly competitive eights race attracting many German internationals. In 2006 Ariel recorded two
outright wins, the first British rowing club ever to do so.

Ariel - Linden Exchange 2007

Linden rowing club drove from Germany to partake in the exchange weekend.  Despite their long journey, our German
visitor were keen to get on the water.

Saturday rowing to Bristol Harbour in combined crews with Ariel, moored up with boats sitting outside of the Ostrich
pub, much to the confusion of many Bristol residents who were unused to seeing rowing boats outside of the city
centre pubs and rowers walking through the centre with oars balanced on their shoulders.  In good old British tradition
Fish and chips were the order of the day!

Following a visit to Redcliffe caves, everyone rowed back to the club.

A treasure hunt around some of Clifton's finest pubs resulted in the winning team which consisted of  Andy, Naomi,
Chris, Rachel and Bjorn.

After the hunt various members of the club showed the Linden rowers Bristol's active night life.

Rowing is known as the best cure for self-induced headaches. On Sunday the cure was used, with the annual race for
the most important trophy in the world taking place. The Bristol Hannover Challenge Cup. The first 200m of the race
was fiercely fought with Ariel and Linden being as close as unborn twins.  Half way through the race Ariel seemed to
remember that what this race was worth. They sat up, lengthened out, and shot off like a crew in need of cream teas
bringing the trophy back to Britain.

Cream tea's are exactly what they got back at the club house.

On Sunday evening all those taking part attended the official dinner hosted by Bristol City Council.
