Rachel Thompson

My Father taught me to row in something akin to a 'red boat' so
long ago that I can't remember when this was. After this my
weekends were filled with rowing and bassoon lessons.

I stayed rowing on Danson Lake with the Erith Rowing Club, apart
from a once-yearly trip to the London Youth Games where we
annually 'cleaned up'. When the new Junior welfare ARA
guidelines came out, the Junior section folded. The guidelines
simply intimidated the club members that supervised us.

I moved to Globe Rowing Club at Greenwich - a long way to travel and a tidal stretch of
water, but they were willing to accept under-16's. Bronwyn, now an Ariel member, was then
one of the Globe members that taught me how to scull better. Sadly, I gave up rowing until
arriving at UWE as I decided to pursue a career as a bassoonist.

I have represented UWE both at sweep and sculling, won and lost some races, and had the
wonderful opportunity to represent Great Britain at the EUSA (European Universities)
Regatta twice in the lightweight 2x. I am halfway through an MA in Journalism after
graduating from Fine Art. So much for the bassoon.

Katie Wilson - Head Coach

I began rowing 13 years ago at Dart Totnes Rowing Club, where I gained a lot of experience
with racing, coaching and organising events both as a junior developing to senior. I’ve just
finished my university course training to be a paediatric nurse at the University of the West of
England where I also enjoyed rowing at different levels and doing a variety of events. In my 3rd
year I took on coaching and running the women’s novice programme, where I was able to
experiment with new ideas and different skills to coaching and developing the women’s squad.
Now being part of Bristol Ariel Rowing Club I look forward to what developments i can achieve,
by using the skills i have gained.

Currently a final year Physiotherapy student at UWE. I hope to improve both my rowing and
coaching abilities over the next few years.
